The Future of Work in the MENA Region: What will the future Arab workforce look like for women and young people?

October 21, 2020

The AIWF Webinar, 'The Future of Work in the MENA Region: What will the future Arab workforce look like for women and young people?', was held on 21 October 2020, welcoming HE Dr Mary Kawar, Former Minister for Planning and International Cooperation, Jordan; and Frank Hagemann, Deputy Regional Director & Director of ILO Decent Work Support Team, ILO Regional Office for the Arab States.

AIWF Founder & Chairman Haifa Al Kaylani was proud to chair this key session, which examined strategies to future-ready the Arab workforce. In her introduction, she stressed the need for macro and micro interventions to empower youth-led innovation, women's economic participation, and mitigate 'brain drain' of talented Arab youth.

Mr Hagemann delivered an excellent overview of the situation for women and young people in the MENA labour market who have been particularly affected by the Covid crisis, and on the importance of expanding digital literacy and skills to ready the workforce for a digitalised future economy. Dr Kawar noted that future of work challenges do not impact only youth but older workers as well, recommending areas for policy focus including the expansion of social protection schemes and mechanisms in the MENA.

AIWF is deeply appreciative to Mr Hagemann and Dr Kawar for their valued participation and shared insights.
